Artist's Biography: Zvi Meirovich, painter, born 1911, Krosno, Poland. He moved to Berlin in 1929, studying painting with Karl Hoffer. In 1934 he immigrated to Mandatory Palestine and settled in Haifa, Israel. Moved to Paris in 1949 and worked there for two years; Designed movie posters for the UFA Film Co. A founder of the New Horizons Group in 1948. Died in Haifa, 1974. Mairovich painted landscape’s and still lifes which gradually transitioned to abstracts. By the late 50’s, he produced dramatic gouache abstracts in large format. Mairovich’s oils mainly focused on abstract landscapes, with stormy contrasts between darkness and flashes of light, verging upon the metaphysical. Education 1929-34 Academy of Art, Berlin, with Karl Hofer. Awards and Prizes 1942 Dizengoff Prize 1951 Dizengoff Prize for Painting and Sculpture, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Municipality of Tel Aviv-Jaffa 1957 Herman Struck Prize, Haifa Municipality 1961 Dizengoff Prize for Painting and Sculpture, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Municipality of Tel Aviv-Jaffa 1969 Schiff Award 1972 Milo Club PrizeZvi Mairovich was born in 1911 in Krosno (Galicia) Poland, where, as a child, he used to paint on the walls of the local houses, church and the village square. At the age of 18 he was sent to Berlin to study to become a Rabbi, but at the same time he also studied painting with Karl Hofer at the Berlin Academy of Art. Mairovich left Berlin in haste, after having been arrested in the street by the German police and immigrated to the Land of Israel in 1934, where he settled in Haifa. Mairovich initiated the establishment the "Group of Haifa Artists" along with the artists Menachem Shemi, Raphael Mohar, and Ozer Shabbat. After meeting Jacob Wechsler he began working with him. In 1948, Mairovich was one of the founders of the ‘New Horizons’ group, along with Arie Aroch, Joseph Zaritsky and Stematsky, whose members tended towards universal abstract, as opposed to the local figurative style which predominated the young Israeli art scene at the time. They sought to free Israeli painting from its concentration on Expressionism and Jewish themes. That group, and Mairovich as one of its founders, left its mark on Israeli painting for many years to come. along with Arie Aroch, Zaritsky and Steimatsky, who sought to free Israelil painting f rom its concentration on Expressionism and Jewish themes. Mairovich’s abstracts burst with color and drama, but it seems he takes no interest in the “abstract”. Mairovich does not engage in “dismantling” the object, nor in generalization, nor form; rather, in constructing a different “nature”, a vibrant event of forces and counter-forces, natural elements erupting from the depths and heights, clashing or meeting. Mairovich participated three times in the Sao Paolo Biennale in the Years 1953, 1958 and 1959 and also participated in the Venice Biennale in the years 1956 and 1962 and exhibited in numerous group and solo exhibitions in many respected establishments an d important galleries in Israel and around the world.Mairovich was married to the author Yehudit Hendel (the Israel Prize laureate in 2003, died in 2014 in Tel Aviv at the age of 93).
