Born in Sanok, Poland, Beksiński initially studied architecture at Kraków Polytechnic, graduating in 1952. He began his artistic career in photography and sculpture before fully dedicating himself to painting. Beksiński’s work is characterized by its dark, surreal, and often nightmarish imagery, depicting scenes of decay, death, and desolation. His art evolved through two main periods: the first featuring expressionistic colors and surreal architecture, and the second focusing on more abstract forms. Despite having no formal training in art, Beksiński became a leading figure in contemporary Polish art.
