Description: Urashima Taro Returning on a Turtle from the Dragon Palace, 1886 by Yoshitoshi Exceptionally rare and terrific design of the fisherman Urashima Taro riding on a turtle as he returns from the Dragon Palace. According to legend, after rescuing a turtle from children who were teasing it, the animal rewarded Urashima Taro with a visit to the Dragon Palace under the sea. Upon his return a few days later, he discovered that hundreds of years had passed. Here, he looks back over his shoulder with a final glance at the Dragon King, his daughter, Princess Otohime, and their attendants bidding him farewell, the palace looming behind them in faint outline. He sits atop a giant turtle with moss flowing from its shell, a sign of longevity, as the animal skims across the waves. Wonderful detail and rich color with no appreciable fading, including fine bokashi shading in the water and sky, and burnishing on the turtle's shell. Includes a dusting of mica across the bottom of both panels--I've not been able to capture this in the photographs, but it is visible in certain angles. The sky in the right panel has wonderful kimetsubushi (woodgrain) visible. Condition: Beautiful colors. Two panels joined at center. Tear in upper left corner margin, not affecting image. Four short 1/4-1/2 inch tears along edges and one longer 2-inch tear in lower right corner. All have been repaired on reverse with japan paper and water soluble wheat starch. Faint pencil notes on reverse describe the tale of Urashima Taro. Pencil annotations in margins identifying artist. Image Size - 14" x 18 7/8"
