Description: Yellow Tulip Poplar, Liriodendron tulipifera25 Tree Seeds Hand Picked November 2022 The Yellow Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is also known as Yellow Poplar and American Tulip tree. The Tulip Poplar is a fast growing tree without the common problems associated with fast growing trees like weak wood or a short life span. The Tulip Poplar is one of the largest of the native trees in the eastern United States. The tree has been known to reach a height of 190 feet with a trunk diameter of 10 feet; however, its average height is about 70 feet. The Tulip Poplar is a major honey plant in the eastern United States, producing a dark reddish, fairly strong honey which is favored by bakers. Grown in full sun, the tree tends to be shorter and rounder making it a good landscape tree. It can also be grown in the shade of a forest setting, which allows the tree to grow very tall and straight with virtually no limbs, making it a valuable timber tree. Hardy in zones 4 – 9. The seeds of the Tulip Poplar tree can remain viable for 4 to 7 years. UsesOrnamental – Excellent shade tree. Brilliant yellow leaves in the fall and lovely tulip shaped flowers in the spring.Wildlife – Major honey plant, enabling bees to produce honey favored in baking.Wood – The soft, fine-grained wood is often used in making organs, interior finish for houses, and clap boards. The wood is often compared in texture, strength and softness to the white pine. Tulip Poplar wood has a reputation for being termite resistant. Germinating Yellow Tulip Poplar seeds:The Tulip Poplar tree grows readily from seeds, which should be sown in a fine soft medium, and in a cool and shady situation. If sown in the fall they come up the succeeding spring, but if sown in spring they often remain a year in the ground. Stratify: Seeds should be cold for eight to twelve weeks, (40 Degrees F) in a moist medium. Check weekly at eight week mark, and remove seeds that have sprouted.Germination: Seeds can also be planted ½ inch directly in soil in a sunny location. Water well, but do not allow soil to become boggy. Note: Seed packets are labeled with seed name and sowing details. Seeds have not been pretreated. Due to the many factors involved in successful germination, the Seller cannot be responsible for the Buyer’s growing methods or mistakes. Although there is a good overview of the plant species on this page, it is still recommended to check specialist literature for more details and practices specific to your climate and soil conditions to avoid mistakes in the germination and growing process.
