Description: XRARE Antique Early 1900s French Board Game "Jeu du Nain-Jaune" Complete (#111) This is the classic Paris French board game known as "Jeu du Nain-Jaune" or "Game of Yellow Dwarf" (nickname for the 7 of diamonds). It is an original and rare complete set with original wooden game board/box and 5 wooden trays, original complete 1860 52-card Grimaud Playing deck, and over 100 original plastic-like tokens or "jetons." The game goes back to a fairy tale by French noblewoman, Baroness d'Aulnoy, published in 1689. Le Nain Jaune (the yellow dwarf) is a cruel story about an ugly, jealous and evil villain. The game first appeared around 1760 in the French region of Lorraine. Specifics: The game board is a wooden box with a lid that slides on and off in grooves. The game rules in French are on a sheet attached to the back of the box lid...in excellent shape. The words "Marque de Fabrique Deposee" with "STFSE JJ PARIS" logo appear on the bottom right-hand bottom corner of the rules sheet. There are 5 removable trays also wooden. Box has dovetail joints and all wood is in excellent condition. Colorful antique paper playing card graphics are attached to the bottom of each piece, also in excellent condition. The "STFSE JJ PARIS" logo appears on the center box with the yellow dwarf art. The complete 52-card deck is a rare authentic original deck from 1860. The Jack of Clubs is marked "B.P. Grimaud & CIP Paris." Cards are in excellent condition with a small light stain on the top edge of the 10 of Diamonds being the only flaw. There are slightly over 100 dime-sized original tokens or "jetons" in the original cardboard box stamped FRANCE on the top. Colors are: 27 ivory, 25 red, 25 yellow and 24 purple. Box measures 12 3/16" long x 10 1/8" wide x 1 5/8" deep. Very scarce and rarely found in this excellent complete shape.
