Estate sale find, vintage original WWII WWII Soldier Letters US Army Air Corps USMC Navy WAVES POW Pinup Newspapers St Paul MN 1940s. The lot appear to be a compilation of mimeographed letters consolidated into a package called the "PX" and redistributed among the group of St. Paul Minnesota soldiers. It appears that WWI veteran, Arthur J. Treacy, and his wife spearheaded and coordinated the effort. They were the owners of Treacy's Drug Store and Soda Fountain on Grand Avenue near the Lexington Theater. The group spanned the various services and branches. The operation was an efficient way to gather home town news and share it with others across the globe. There are approximately 24+ letters, several pages each. There are some handwritten notes along with a couple of photos. Also included are a few issues of the Saint Paul News Digest "condensed" for Service Men. The letters shared insights to what was important in the lives of the various soldiers and below are a few of the excerpts: "I've finally been assigned to the 18th General Hospital which is located in the Fiji Islands... Tropical disease are relatively rare as compared to other So. Pacific Islands. It's a veritable jungle paradise, a Garden of Eden, but acre for acre i still prefer any part of the U.S.A. to anything over here with the single exception of camp Barkley." "The Treacys finally rec'd a card from Bob's brother George who is a Jap prisoner since the fall of Corregidor - He is well in good health - uninjured - wants to be remembered to all." "Remember now is your chance to take us along on your travels - places many of (us) will never be able to see in person and only thru your eyes & your pen can we live and travel them with you - A.J. Treacy - Editor in Chief" "I am at the out-post which is about 12 miles from the rest of our battery. We have four men here who act as observers and report all airplanes over the radio to our gun positions. I am here just to see that the radio and power plant are kept in running order." "There are three St. Paul boys here in the motor pool and we have been having a swell time bulling each other about the old home town... I also got acquainted with a WAC from our fair city and to my disgust she had never been to Treacy's..." "Now I'm settled down here at a job I'm not too crazy about. I'm a timekeeper in the tower of our squadron. I sit up in the tower and watch planes land and take off. I have to check time, no. of the plane, pilot's name, type of hop... All WAVEs are grounded except Link Trainers. I'll sure be happy when they change that though because I want to go up on a few hops... Danny has several campaign ribbons, etc. with gold stars from Pearl Harbor, Midway and Guadalcanal. He's been recommended for some kind of medals too. Said he'd find out when he got settled. Don't worry - I'm too old to get reckless now. That's my trouble don't you think? I should have got reckless years ago.
