Description: Original WW2 RAF "AIR" map entitled "PARIS" which also features a number of well known 'BATTLE OF THE BULGE' locations such as BASTOGNE, ST HUBERT, HOUFFALIZE etc It belonged to Wing Commander Henry Ellis Angell (DFC), a Squadron Leader who flew his Stirling bomber on some of the War's most famous Airborne missions such as OPERATION TONGA, OPERATION MARKET GARDEN and OPERATION VARSITY. During OPERATION TONGA, he flew below enemy radar and successfully dropped paratroopers onto 'Drop Zone N' for the capture of two vital bridges to the South of Sword Beach codenamed 'Ham' and 'Jam'. These bridges (later christened 'Pegasus' and 'Horsa') were critical to the success of the D-Day landings which began just a few hours later. During OPERATION MARKET GARDEN, he towed a HORSA glider to its approach on Nijmegen, returning several times on resupply flights despite their anticipation by German anti-aircraft units. Six months later, as part of OPERATION VARSITY, he towed another glider for the Allied crossing of The Rhine. In between these iconic Operations, he also flew numerous secret missions dropping SAS and SOE operatives into Europe, and resupplying resistance movements in France, Norway and Denmark. A fascinating 1994 interview with Wing Commander Angell can be heard on the website of the Imperial War Museum, where most of his wartime effects are housed. The map measures 76cm x 61cm and is in great condition for its age and service use. Printed in July 1942.
