Description: For sale is a WW1 Victory Medal To Wounded Pte John Race Machine Gun Corps & Research. This World War One victory medal is engraved on the rim “82055 Pte J Race MGC”. John was born in 1892 in Durham. He lived at 31 Gray avenue, council houses, Chester street in Durham. John enlisted into the British army on the 4th of august 1916 at Newcastle on Tyne. His trade on enlistment was a munitions labourer. John was sadly wounded on the 10th of September 1917 when a him and his unit was burning rubbish and a live round was thrown into the fire. The live round exploded and went through his arm. In this letter from his Lieutenant, the lieutenant is saying that John was not to blame for this incident. John Race served with the 7th battalion machine gun corps and Durham light infantry during World War One. John was entitled to a British war medal, victory medal and a silver wound badge. Unfortunately only the victory medal is present (and has a replacement ribbon). John was discharged on the 18th of January 1919. Accompanying this medal is 14 scans of his service records.
