Description: Original WW1 AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN military map of ITALY entitled "VARESE". Covers an area of Italy just North of Milan which includes VARESE, INTRA, PALLANZA, DOMODOSSOLA, BIELLA etc. The map also contains an area of Switzerland which features the Italian speaking city of LOCARNO. Produced in 1912 by the Austro-Hungarian "K.u.k. Militargeographisches Institut", but somehow acquired by the British War Office's 'Geographical Section General Staff' Map Room the following year. Bears subsequent official archive stamps from the War Office and the Directorate of Military Survey, but the map was eventually superseded and donated to Edinburgh University, who recently sold it off as part of a much wider collection.
