W.S. George THREE GRACES Atlas China 22 Kt Gold, 9.5" Plate, Lido Shape c. 1930s

Description: W.S. George THREE GRACES Atlas China 22 Kt Gold, 9.5" Lido Shape (c. 1930s) This plate is very richly decorated with a design of the Three Graces in the center, surrounded by gold filigree and a wide heavily gilded gold scalloped rim. There are two marks on this vintage decorative plate, one from W.S. George and the other for Atlas China (NY). I'm not sure if the plate was made by George and decorated by Atlas, or if the entire production was by W.S. George and Atlas served as the distributor. The shape is the noted George "Lido" shape, and I believe it would date to the early 1930s. The decal design is quite charming The three Graces are resting under a tree, holding and surrounded by various symbols. The Three Graces were Aglaia, Euphrosyne, and Thalya, and they were associated with love and beauty, nature, creativity, charm, and joy. (In this plate's design, if you look carefully, you can see that they are also "baring" their beauty!) This plate is in very good condition. There is one odd spot of damage on the under-edge of the rim (not visible from the front, see closeup photos), which looks like a rough shallow chip or gouge; it does not penetrate to the front surface. There is also one hard-to-see small spot of wear to the gold trim on the left rim (see closeup photo with red arrow). Otherwise, the gold trim is very intact. There are no other chips or cracks or crazing or signs of wear that I can see. The plate has two marks, one on top of the other. The bottom mark is a green mark for "Lido | W.S. George | White | Made in U.S.A. | 156A." The second mark is a large gold logo for "Atlas China | New York | Since 1918 | Warranted | 22 Kt. Gold." There is also a gold number 328.
