Description: A wonderful antique Georgian 15K gold portrait pendant necklace of Lady Georgiana Agar-Ellis dating to circa 1822. Lady Georgiana Agar-Ellis (nee Howard), also known as Lady Georgiana Dover, was born in 1804 to George Howard, the 6th Earl of Carlisle. In 1822, at the age of 18 she married George James Welbore Agar-Ellis (born 1797), 1st Baron Dover, and they lived in Gowran Castle which the Agar family had bought during the Restoration (1660-1688). They had four children, two daughters and two sons-the 2nd and 4th Barons of Dover-before George's premature death at the age of 36 in 1833. Lady Georgiana died in 1860. Lady Georgiana sounds like she could be straight out of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice-it's wonderful to think Jane Austen was publishing her novels in the early 1800's as Lady Georgiana was growing up! Looking at her clothes and comparing to other paintings (we have added some examples in our pictures), this original half portrait painting shows the young and beautiful Lady Georgiana most likely just after she was married in 1822. Framed in a solid 15K gold setting engraved 'Lady Georgina Agar Ellis' the painting is protected by its original gently domed crystal cover. The painting was probably originally attached to a Georgian velvet bracelet and later converted to a pendant as what looks to be the original velvet is on the reverse for wearing comfort. The pendant is attached to a more contemporary removable solid 9K gold chain. The pendant comes in an antique red leather, white silk and black velvet box. The pendant is unmarked and tests for 15K gold, the chain is marked '375' and tests for 9K gold. A perfect opportunity to own part of England's Georgian aristocratic history! The painting measures approximately 1 3/8 x 1 3/16 inches, the pendant including bail is about 1 3/4 x 1 5/16 inches. The chain is about 18 1/2 inches long. The necklace has a total weight of about 10.9 grams. The pendant has all over general wear consistent with age. The painting has been cracked and repaired down the right edge which does not touch the portrait and there is all over general wear to the portrait, mostly around the edges, which gives it a wonderful dreamy look. The crystal has minor light scratching, the bail is strong and the chain is in excellent condition with a strong clasp. The box has general light wear with strong hinges and it closes with a tight snap. Thanks for looking and please take a look at my other items!
