This lovely quality piece is made of solid 9 carat gold, and is set with a wonderful, natural dendritic agate surrounded by chunky almandine garnets. The inclusions in the main stone are known as 'dendrites' and are its main feature, branching within the stone like ferns. Their varying levels within the stone give an impression of depth as they fade towards the back - and the choice of cut, shaping and angle of setting are critical to its beauty and creating the image that you see. Due to the good size of the garnets, between each of them a sliver of gold shows that creates contrast and adds to the naturalistic look within the geometric simplicity of the overall design. Its superb tapering shoulders attach high up the head, making the ring a low profile, extremely wearable piece as they almost imperceptibly taper around the lovely quality gold band. Possibly the best aspect of this ring though, is the back of the head - a stunning, typically Georgian burst pattern with flared ribs that show quality, authenticity and attention to detail as is to be expected from an item of supreme quality. It's in fair to good condition, perfectly wearable but does show scratches and cracks to all the garnets, though they are all present. The agate also shows slight surface wear in line with use. The ring itself is in surprisingly good condition for its age. Dating to roughly 1770, it's a size 8.5 resizable and measures an ideal 16 x 13 mm across the head.
