Description: lots of shelf wear Nina Bawden wrote many excellent children's stories and novels during the 1960s and 1970s. The Witch's Daughter is one of her earlier works, published in the mid 1960s. The Weekly Reader Book Club sent me my copy sometime around 1965 or 1966 when I was in 3rd or 4th grade. I loved the story because it was a good mystery, but even more importantly it helped open my eyes to a wider world beyond my small town in the southern US.Perdita is a young girl living on a small Scottish island. She is popularly believed to be a witch and thus is shunned by the few other children on the island. She spends most of her time wandering about, cared for by an older lady who is housekeeper to a man leading an isolated life in an old manse. Then one day a ferry boat brings visitors to the island: a family with two children, a blind girl Perdita's age and her older brother, and a strange man who pays secret visits to the man who employs Perdita's caretaker. Eventually it is revealed that the two men are criminals hiding out from the law, and Perdita, the blind girl, and her brother help bring them to justice.
