RUSSELL The Civil War General and his wife co-sign a loan made to his mother-in-law from the Boatmen's Savings Bank in an 1874 contract Document signed "Winfield Scott Hancock", "Almira D. Hancock", and "Adaline E. Russell" in faded black ink. 4 pages, 22x17 flat, 11x17 folded. August 6, 1874. New York City, New York. Deed entrusting the amount of $28,000 to Hancock's mother-in-law Adaline E. Russell from the Boatmens Savings Bank in St. Louis, Missouri; the loan is co-signed by both General Winfield Scott Hancock and his wife Almira D. Hancock. Notarized and sealed by Louis D. Picot of St. Louis County, Missouri. WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK (1824-1886), a highly successful Union Corps commander during the Civil War and a hero of the Battle of Gettysburg (1863), was the Democratic Party's candidate for President in 1880, losing very narrowly to James A. Garfield 4.45 million (214 electoral) votes to 4.44 million (155 electoral) votes. He was Commanding General of the U.S. Army's Department of the East, headquartered on Governor's Island, from 1877 until his death. Confederate General Lewis Armistead, a close friend of the Hancock's, was mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg while assaulting Hancock's troops and bequeathed his personal Bible to ALMIRA (RUSSELL) HANCOCK, who had married Hancock in 1850. ADALINE E. RUSSELL was the mother of Mrs. Hancock. Normal mailing folds. Toned. Slightly worn and soiled. Ink shows through on verso. Inks stains throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
