Description: [PHILIP SHERIDAN] WILLIAM T. SHERMAN. Historically important August 25, 1865 autograph letter signed by, “W.T. Sherman, Maj. Genl.,” introducing General Philip Sheridan to Francis DeGress, commander of Sherman’s artillery battery. HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT 1865 AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY GENERAL WILLIAM T. SHERMAN INTRODUCING GENERAL PHILIP SHERIDAN TO HIS ARTILLERY BATTERY COMMANDER Reads in full: “It gives me pleasure to introduce Francis DeGress comparatively a young man, but who commanded one of my very best Batteries of Artillery the whole war. He is an uncommonly fine young man and is now working on his own book and is traveling towards Texas. I assure you he is worthy any favor you can extend him.” Accompanied with autograph endorsements signed by Francis T. Sherman and Richard A. Kent, aide-de-camps to Sheridan and General Frederick Steele, on the verso. DeGress (1840-1883) was regarded as a hero for his strategic bombardment of Atlanta and Columbia during Sherman’s March to the Sea. We were unable to locate any correspondence between Sherman (1820-1891) and Sheridan (1831-1888), two of the leading Union generals during the American Civil War. “IT GIVES ME PLEASURE TO INTRODUCE FRANCIS DEGRESS COMPARATIVELY A YOUNG MAN, BUT WHO COMMANDED ONE OF MY VERY BEST BATTERIES OF ARTILLERY THE WHOLE WAR.” Contains two pages on Head Quarters Military Division of the Mississippi letterhead that is blindstamped, measures 10 by 8 inches, created in St. Louis, and in poor to good condition with soiling, toning, staining, separations along the folds, and having been contemporaneously attached to linen (likely by DeGress).
