Description: William J. Scott (pupil of Thomas Hart Benton) WPA Pastel on paper board of a mining quarry in the western hills, signed on mat lower center. Very well rendered, stunning piece of period WPA art completed in the 1930s. Good condition overall, everything looks completely original. Painting has some wear and light toning from age, small hairline tear/creases in upper right. Mat has toning, frame has patina and wear to surface, glass with scattered wear. Please see all photos for condition. Scott was strongly influenced by the work of Thomas Hart Benton, with whom he made a number of summer painting trips (Falk et al, Who was Who in American Art, Madison, Connecticut, 1999, Vol. III, p. 2958). Like Benton, he used color and simplified, stylized form to portray workers and the American landscape with a surreal energy, a style now closely identified with works produced during the Depression years in America, particularly under the WPA. 32.5” x 27.5” framed Ships well packed and fully insured. Painting can be shipped with or without glass, please inform me of your preference
