FRANKLIN McKinley fought at the Battle of Antietam, served on the staff of future President Rutherford B. Hayes, and was the last Civil War veteran to serve as President. Franklin graduated at the top of his West Point class in 1843, fought in several battles in the Eastern Theater, was captured by General Jubal Early but escaped, and managed the Colt Fire Arms Company after the war.
