ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Rare Antique 1905 Color Halftone Print (not a modern reproduction) of a wonderful family fireside scene titled “Home Keeping Hearts Are Happiest”, after the original 1903 painting by the famous listed painter & illustrator ‘William Ladd Taylor’ (American, 1854-1926), whose printed signature & date appears lower right in the image corner (tough to see). Publisher & Print Info: There are two copyrights on the piece: ‘Copyright 1904, By The Curtis Publishing Co.’, as appears printed lower right in the outer margin area just beneath the image and ‘Copyright 1905 By Moffat, Yard & Co., N.Y.’, as appears printed lower left respectively. The title is printed lower middle in the bottom margin area. This particular image by Taylor was originally published along with a companion piece titled “The Hanging of The Crane”, a romantic fireside scene of a man and woman, and were part of ‘The Copley Prints’ published by Curtis & Cameron, Boston, and were accompanied by poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow—ours being part of the poem; “Stay, stay at home, my heart, and rest; Home-keeping hearts are happiest. For those that wander they know not where, Are full of trouble and full of care; To stay at home is best.” The image was considered one of Taylor’s most popular images and was originally published in Curtis Publishing Co.’s flagship publication of Ladies’ Home Journal, December 1904, Pg. 11 (B&W in the issue); in color for the October 1915 issue and also a small reproduction used in February 1927. Taylor was their lead illustrator from 1895 until his death in 1926—featuring over 80 of his works in their Journal over the course of his career. Beginning in 1920, all the Taylor works in the Journal were biblical scenes and upon his death in 1926, he was working on yet another, “Remember Now Thy Creator in the Days of Thy Youth”, from Ecclesiastes (Info from: wltaylor.com). In 1905, Moffat, Yard & Co. published this reproduction along with three other Taylor/Longfellow prints (they called lithographs) from the “Pictures from Longfellow” series which also included “Maidenhood”, “The Skeleton in Armor” and “The Golden Legend”. The Print is on a nice lightly textured medium-weight cream-colored wove paper stock. Size & Condition: The size of the Print with wide margins is 21-15/16” x 15”, Image size is 14-7/8” x 11-9/16” and is in VeryGood-Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with rich color & tones. This Print has been in one of our archive drawers amongst other antique & vintage prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it is as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. This will look stunning all framed-up! Simply beautiful! Please disregard any tiny speck-reflections from the photolights on the surface of the image from the lightly textured paper stock. There are only 8 very tiny & completely negligible outer margin edge tears (nowhere close to image area), which are all repaired from behind with archival tape for protection and are negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out, and the tears area as follows; 3/8” tear upper right corner; 3/8” tear top edge middle-right; 1/4” top edge middle; 1/8” bottom edge far-right; (3 tears near each other) 1/4”, 5/16” & 1/4” right edge lower-right and 5/8" tear on he left edge lower-left. No foxing evident. Extremely minimal very slight & small crescent-creasing here & there in the image area which aren’t really noticeable except from behind and aren’t worth mentioning. Other light creasing here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges, and small dog-ear creasing in the outer margin corners too—all of which are negligible as well and can easily be matted & framed out. Slight normal toning of the print from age (not really noticeable). Minimal slight topical soiling (very lightly grubby [finger smudges too]) noticeable here & there in the outer margin areas only from age and from being in a drawer amongst other etchings & prints this whole time which is (not affecting image area)—also negligible. Other slight outer margin edgewear with some dents & dings here & there—also negligible. There is a very slight & very thin light score-line from when the piece was first originally printed (original to the printing press/original to plate) which is tough to see going horizontally side-to-side in the lower middle image area (near father/daughter’s feet/son’s head/wife’s dress/chair) and I almost overlooked it, but is so minimal that it really isn’t worth mentioning either, and certainly doesn’t detract at all from the piece—it is what it is and I figured I’d mention it. This gorgeous antique print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
