This book originally belonged to Carrie Matilda Stewart Haskett, with her name and address written in ink on the front free endpaper. She was the daughter of the prominent attorney William Jay Haskett, New York. Haskett's obituary reads, "William Jay Haskett, one of the oldest admiralty lawyers in this City, died suddenly, early yesterday morning, at his residence, No. 340 West Twenty-first street. He had long been suffering from consumption, but the immediate cause of his death is supposed to have been a congestive chill. Mr. Haskett began practice at the Admiralty Bar in this City some fifty years ago, and, with such men as ex-Judge Beebe, Judge Donehue, and Hon. Erastus C. Benedict, held a leading position in admiralty practice. He took a great interest in prison reform movements, the improvement of tenements for the working classes, and the amelioration of the condition of the negroes in the South, and was exceedingly active and energetic in furthering all sensible projects looking to these ends that were brought to his attention. He was President of the Excise Board from 1865 to 1868, and did all in his power to have the practical working of the then existing Excise laws conduce to the interest of those favoring the temperance cause. He lost a son in the late Civil War, and grief on account of the death of his daughter, his only remaining child, is thought to have depressed his spirits as to hastened his death. His funeral will take place to-morrow from his late residence, No. 340 West Twenty-first street, and his remains will be interred in Green-Wood. Suitable action in reference to the demise of Mr. Haskett will be taken by the members of the Admiralty Bar." The New York Times, December 19, 1876. The memorial bookplate reads, "In Memory of Carrie Matilda Stewart Haskett. Who Died in the City of New York, February 27th, 1874. Aged 13 Years. She 'being dead, yet speaketh,' Presented to Miss Addie Stiger, of New York." A brief obituary notice was found listing an Addie Stiger, 148 East 62d St. (New York), died Feb. 8, 1913. Although we were not able to find an obituary for the young Miss Haskett, there was a large outbreak of scarlet fever in NYC in 1874 which could be one possibility of her early death. An interesting piece of NYC history. Send questions. We are currently listing a diverse selection of photography and art.
