ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous Antique & Ultra-Rare Circa 1905 Religious/Inspirational Hand-Colored Photo-mechanical Print Depicting a River Inlet with Two Turtles on a Log titled, “A Quiet Pool”, after the original watercolor painting by the listed seascape & landscape painter, ‘William G. Starkey’ (American, 1864-1928), whose signature is most often listed incorrectly as ‘W. G. Starkey’ and as a result over the course of the last several decades, he has been very often misattributed to the other listed artist, George William Starkey (American, 1889-1986) who had similar initials (though transposed). W. G. Starkey is primarily known for his seascapes/coastal & landscape paintings and pastels, as well as published prints done at the turn of the 20th century/early 1900s— which, according to the wrong attribution and birthdate above of 1889, would’ve made him a working ‘teenage’ commercial artist in the early 1900s when many of his paintings were dated and art prints were reproduced, which is highly unlikely.... You can read a brief biography (to the best of my research) below of the artist W.G. Starkey, whom we believe is the actual artist. Publisher & Print Info: The publisher’s lightly-embossed copyright, name & location, ‘©, Campbell Art Co., Elizabeth, N.J.’, appears twice lower-right in the image corner (somewhat tough to see in grassy area, with one less visible). You Can Read the Publisher Biography Below. Starkey’s image of his painting “A Quiet Pool” was later also published in the 1923 book, The Master Library: Songs of the Seers, Vol. 5, by Walter Scott Athearn, General Editor (The Foundation Press, Inc.) which was used to illustrate a short inspirational Biblical Psalm/song (preceding & below the book’s image [which was cropped a bit] on the pages) and read: “A QUIET POOL: He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water.” Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor standeth in the way of sinners, Nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of the water, That bringeth forth its fruit in its season, Whose leaf also doth not wither; And whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so; But are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous; But the way of the ungodly shall perish. Publisher & Print Info continued…The Print itself is on a nice medium-weight ivory-colored wove paper stock which is tipped (along its top edge) to its original decorative & lightly textured beige-cream backing stock which features a nice faux-plate mark & border around the Print, which has been basically protecting the Print this whole time, but is missing its original flip-front info tag which would have had the publisher logo, title, artist name, publisher name & location etc. Size & Condition: The Print size itself is 9-3/4” x 7-7/8”, Mounted size is 20” x 15-7/8”. The Print itself is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age—beautiful & delicate hand-coloring. This Print has been tucked away in one of our archive drawers amongst other hand-colored photos, lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed & hand-colored and is as ‘mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. This will look gorgeous all framed-up! No damage at all on this lovely piece to speak of. Slight minimal/negligible toning of the Print from age, which isn;t really noticeable especially amidst the ivory color of the paper stock itself, and some slight toning of the backing stock which is in good condition for its age with some light topical surface soiling form age & from being in a drawer this whole time amidst other prints too which is negligible since most, if not all of it, would come off well with a good (white) eraser if one so chooses—as evidenced by where the info tag would have been in the upper-left outer backing-stock margin area—but we’d highly suggest having the Print professionally removed from its backing-stock and framed & matted with all archival (acid-free) materials and UV Conservation Glass to protect & preserve the hand-coloring of the piece. There is also some light creasing and a few tiny foxing specks scattered here & there on the backing stock as well—also negligible. This beautiful antique print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older matburn or lightfade. Truly a lovely piece… Publisher Brief Bio: Campbell Art Company (AKA Alfred S. Campbell Art Company, Campbell Studio & Campbell Prints, Inc., American Publishers, c.1871-c. late 1930s) was originally founded by Alfred S. Campbell (English-American, 1840-1912) who was an English art photographer and commercial inventor. In 1867, Campbell was invited to come to the United States where he formed a partnership with Napoleon Sarony, under the Sarony name. Sarony had a great desire to gain access to Campbell’s patented photographic process, but within four short years, their business relationship dissolved. Campbell soon decided to move to New Jersey, where he built his state-of-the-art studio which had an onsite photo imaging production facility in Elizabethtown, initially calling it ‘Campbell Studios’. Aside from his art studio and patented photographic process for platinum photo-printing, Campbell also invented a panorama lens and held numerous patents for cameras and various paper products. Over the years, the company specialized in reproductions of well-known artists’ works, chromolithographs, various hand-colored prints & photographs finished in watercolor & oil, ‘Apographs’ (hand-colored rich brown photo-gelatin prints), platinum & carbon prints, stereograph cards, scenic views, postcards, portrait cabinet cards as well as portrait and theatrical photography for stage & screen, “Washington Prints” which included the best of the mural decorations in the Congressional Library, as well as Campbell's patented “Art-Relievo” platinum photographic prints which were 3-dimensional photographic reproductions in ‘absolute relief’ (embossed) that he sold in the late 1890s through the early 1900s (c1896-c1904). Campbell reproduced various master works, Native American Indian portraits/scenes, religious/inspirational scenes, genre scenes, boudoir images etc., by way of the Art Relievo process. What is also interesting about the Art Relievos is that, Campbell initially worked with the Carbon Studio in Manhattan, but soon hired one of their top employees, the well-known American pictorialist photographer, Rudolf Eickemeyer, Jr. (1862-1932) who later became art manager of Campbell’s portrait studio at 564-568 Fifth Avenue in New York. While there, Eickemeyer, Jr. produced many of the early Art Relievo prints, carbon & platinum prints, as well as prints in watercolor, oil etc., and remained at Campbell Studios intermittently until 1915. The Art-Relievo prints came in various sizes (6.5 x 8" up to 15 x 60") and they were quite expensive back-in-the-day, ranging in price from $2-$50 each (average about $72- to $1,819- in today’s dollar for 2023)—certainly not cheap! For whatever reason the Art Relievos seemed very short-lived; possibly because they were too expensive to make (with the molds & mold-machines needed perhaps), and many were sold with the extra deep frames which drove up the cost too, or maybe people just couldn't afford them or they proved to be unpopular with the public—not sure… On the open market, the Art Relievos don't tend to bring much at auction or via other online resources unfortunately, possibly because most people, various collectors or even many antique/fine art dealers don't really know what they are, but they are definitely an interesting and very cool patented print-process that should hopefully become more-collectible with time. The Alfred S. Campbell Art Company also had gallery ‘Art Rooms’ located at 377-379 Broadway in New York City, their portrait studio located at 564-568 Fifth Avenue as well as a prints division called Campbell Prints, Inc., located at 33 West Thirty-Fourth Street, and at 59 West 19th Street. There were also divisions in Baltimore, MD and Charlestown, WV. By 1900, the company branched out under the direction of William A. Morand in Manhattan at 538 5th Avenue and was called Campbell Studio. Morand had family & social connections in New York and built it into one of the most dominant companies in Manhattan at that time. Morand made a name for himself as one of the leading portraitists in the city. After Morand’s death in 1909, the company took an interest in theatrical photography and furthered their success with the entertainment industry with innovations in the new style of celebrity photography and portraiture. Around that same time, the company was primarily known as the Campbell Art Company. By 1915, they specialized in half-length portrait photos of screen and stage stars in the very fashionable dress styles of the times. They routinely supplied theaters and magazines with their photographs. They were a large force in the entertainment industry, but by 1925 the company had to take a corporate charter for $25,000 and by 1928 the company’s entertainment market had ended. They did manage to continue a commercial portrait studio through the 1930s. (Written & compiled chronologically by Mark Strong of Meibohm Fine Arts, Inc., East Aurora, NY) Brief Artist Biography: William G. Starkey (American, 1864-1928) was a painter and colorist primarily known for his watercolors and pastels of marine/seascapes/coastal views and landscapes as well as published prints published at the turn of the 20th century/early 1900s. William G. Starkey was born in July, 1864 to David Robert Starkey (1821-1887) who was a widower previously married to Martha K. “Maggie” (née Coe) Starkey (1823-1861) who were married on October 3, 1843 in Rutland, Meigs County, Ohio. His half-siblings included Anne M. Starkey-Gilliam and Charles C. Starkey. His father may have remarried after his wife Martha’s passing since William was born in 1864 (three years after her death), or he possibly had William out of wedlock perhaps, but I haven’t been able to find any genealogical information to that fact. Over the course of his career, Starkey had resided and worked as an artist and colorist from various cities to include New York City, Elizabeth, NJ and later in Bristol, NH where he had sold his marine and landscape paintings through various upscale department stores across the country as well as had some of his works reproduced as art prints which were sold as early as 1904 by some well-known publishers back-in-the-day such as, the Alfred S. Campbell & Co. (AKA Campbell Art Company). By the mid 1910s, Starkey worked from his studio located in the Miller Building at 275 Morris Avenue, Dept. C, in Elizabeth, NJ, as well as took out ads at that time in certain magazines stating that people could contact him to, “LEARN how you may obtain a genuine Water Color Marine view, size 10x24 inches absolutely free”, which more than likely was his sales technique to entice people to custom order other paintings for their home decor. He continued to have some of his artwork reproduced as prints at that time and also later designed and self-published his own specialty papers to include a “Gullflight” paper (an all over design of flying seagulls) in 1917, as well as had artwork included in books in the early 1920s. Starkey’s signature is most often listed as W. G. Starkey and over the course of the last several decades, he has been very often misattributed to the other listed artist, George William Starkey (American, 1889-1986) who had similar initials (though transposed) to W. G. Starkey’s name—which, according to the wrong attribution and birthdate above of 1889, would’ve made him a working ‘teenage’ commercial artist in the early 1900s when many of his paintings were dated and art prints were reproduced, which is highly unlikely... From about 1920 on, William Starkey resided in Bristol, NH where he later died on May 20, 1928 and he was buried in the family plot in Forest Rose Cemetery located in Lancaster, Fairfield County, Ohio. Circa 1890, William married Mollie C. (née Julian) Starkey (1869-1940).
