Description: William Alexander, first earl of Stirling, Recreations with the Muses (London: Tho[mas] Harper,1637). 2 parts in 1 volume. First edition. In English. Large quarto. Woodcut title border (this very slightly shaved, no engraved portrait, as is usual, though with initial and final blank). Binding: contemporary calf with 5 raised bands on spine, neatly rebacked preserving original spine. STC 347. Provenance: Mary Starkey (17th-century signature on first blank); Sir Thomas Preston(bookplate); Robert S. Pirie (bookplate). In custom-fitted archival-grade protective mylar covers. Alexander (1577-1640) was a Scottish poet and dramatist at the court of James I and Charles I of England, specializing in tragedies. Recreations with the Muses is his collected works, containing his tragedies on Croesus, Darius, and Caesar; his magnum opus Doomes-Day, in twelve "hours" or books; and other poetic compositions. This copy, attractively rebacked in a sound binding, is notable for having been owned by a contemporary (seventeenth-century) female reader, Mary Starkey.
