Description: White label promo first pressing of the original Reprise LP "The Academy in Peril." Actually Warner/Reprise had some pretty good instincts about what was worthy of release, and 1966-72 was full of idealistic Reprise/Bizarre/Warner uncommercial albums like this one. Remember the $2 sampler records they were putting out at this point? Some amazing artists on there. Reprise had the payoff (artistically) in Cale's next album, Paris 1919, which is still the best thing he ever did. Did it sell? No! Did they drop him from the label? They certainly did. But...we thank them for the great ears and great faith. But right now we're talking about The Academy in Peril. When you go looking for original copies of this, you're just as likely to find white label promo copies like this one, since it appears to have sold almost no copies at retail. (Q.v. the promo copy of Metal Machine Music to be found in my other listed items.) And yet it's not a pure ambient product like Cale's record with Terry Riley--this is a fun record! Mostly instrumental but really personal and adventurous, and references to everything from John Milton to Legs Larry. The Warhol cover is very sweet and special, homage to the uniform appearance of Kodachrome slide mounts, where the frame is always the same and the variation comes in the little postage-stamp-sized transparency in the middle. Cool that he thought of it, and a great use of die-cutting. I guess this is the fanciest package a John Cale album ever came in. Because you're the kind of person who wants to own something like this, you deserve free postage and insurance, don't you think?
