Description: White hornets plus nest section in shadow box. Real stinging insects on hive. I came across a hive of hundreds of these stingers that had been collected from someone's property and then stored in a freezer. I thought I might be able to do something with them. Flash forward a year later and I found a shadow box deep enough to fit the circular section of nest that I collected. The nest section has been saturated with sealant for strength. Each insect was thawed, rehydrated, and then I pinned the wings in the extended / flying position. Each bug is placed on the hive as if they are happily swarming. Everything is placed in a background of soft green botanical print paper. This piece would be an absolute nightmare for anyone with trypophobia (fear of small holes). It's kind of upsetting as it is ...most people, myself included, have an aversion to stinging insects. But you can observe them here safely through a pane of glass. Also, they cannot sting you anyway because they are not alive. I've never done a piece quite like this before and am extremely pleased with how it turned out. It's 6x6x2."
