In an early historical event at air navigation, WALTER WELLMAN and crew of four left Atlantic City October 15, 1910 aboard his airship AMERICA in an attempt to cross the Atlantic ocean. After 3 days out at sea, the airship had to be abandoned. Fortunately, a passing ship heading back to New York, the TRENT, rescued all five of the occupants.
