Description: Lake Chaubunagungamaug, also known as Webster Lake, is a lake in the town of Webster Massachusetts. Since 1921, the lake has also been known by a much longer name having 45 letters comprising of fourteen syllables…. Lake Chauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. The lake has become famous for having the longest name of any geographic feature in all of the United States. The name comes from Loup, an Algonquian language, and is often said to mean, “Fishing Place at the Boundaries-Neutral Meeting Grounds”. A more fitting translation is “lake divided by islands”, according to anthropologist Ives Goddard. Today “Webster Lake” is the most used. The lake is a 1,442-acre lake with a 17-mile shoreline in southern Massachusetts, near the Connecticut border. It is the third largest fresh body of water in the state, after slightly larger Long Pond and the much larger Quabbin Reservoir. Although the lake is natural in origin, its outlet has a dam that raises the water level by a couple feet. The lake is commonly divided into three smaller bodies of water, North Pond, Middle Pond, and South Pond. They are connected by narrow channels. The lake has 7 to 8 islands. Some have houses and are habitable, but most are extremely small and uninhabitable. Long Island is the largest and has many homes and utilities. It is in Middle Pond. The card is an “Albertype Co” card sent to “Mrs Lois Judkins from Alice” and was postmarked 1914. It is in very good condition with minor wear and a clean, clear, nicely colored image of the lake and Long Island. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
