Description: “WE NEVER EXPECTED A BATTLE”: THE CIVILIANS AT GETTYSBURG, 1863 FINE CONDITION Sharp, Bright, Clean, Tight, Paperback Book Rich with Period Photos and Portraits REPRINT BY THE ADAMS COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY This is an interesting and worthwhile study of the impact of the battle at Gettysburg on the civilian population. Frightened people, who hid where ever possible, hid live stock where they could and hid valuables when possible. They were prisoners in their homes and were being invaded by a hostile army. They spent three days in cellars, avoided looking out of windows for fear of being hit by a sniper or just a stray bullet. Farmers lost crops, livestock, and had barns burned down, thereby ruining them financially for years to come. After the battle, came the clean up and the citizens of Gettysburg became the owners of thousands of dead horses, dead cattle and dead men; they also were responsible for the thousands of wounded. They dug the trenches for mass burials, tried to identify the bodies and contact next of kin where possible. They put up with an influx of opportunist, and souvenir hunters. The female population of Gettysburg were heroic by providing care and comfort to the sick and wounded of both armies. It is hard for the modern day reader to digest the horrific smells, the appearances of swarms of flies and rodents, with Dogs, stray pigs and hogs eating human flesh that layed out in the fields for days in the hot summer heat. Robert Bloom, a professor at the prestigious Gettysburg College was able to find diaries, books and speeches that were primary source material for his well done presentation. Any Civil War enthusiast or for that matter, war enthusiast, should read what takes place in war, because, there is no glamor. This book is in excellent condition.
