Description: Warren is a city in and the county seat of Trumbull County, in northeastern Ohio, approximately 14 miles northwest of Youngstown and 56 miles southeast of Cleveland. Ephraim Quinby founded Warren in 1798, on 441 acres of land that he purchased from the Connecticut Land Company, as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. The town was the county seat of the western Reserve, then became the Trumbull County seat in 1801. In 1833, Warren contained county buildings, two printing offices, a bank, five mercantile stores, and about 600 inhabitants. Warren had a population of 1,600 in 1846 and became an important center of trade for farmers living in the surrounding countryside during the latter decades of the nineteenth century. 1888, four railroads connected the community with other parts of Ohio. Warren continued to grow in the twentieth century and remains an important trading and manufacturing center. Many examples of late 19th and early 20th century architectural styles still stand in downtown. One of those buildings is the current Trumbull County Courthouse which is the third temple of justice to occupy Warren’s historic public square. Its design is Richardson Romanesque and features Ohio’s largest common pleas courtroom. When a disastrous fire took down the county’s second courthouse in 1895, the firm of Labelle and French of Marion, Indiana was selected as the architects and E.M. Campfield of Findley, Ohio was awarded the contract to build the new edifice. The cornerstone was laid in 1895. Amherst sandstone had been selected for the building with a copper roof. The tower framework was completed in 1896 and the courthouse bell, weighing 1500 pounds, and the tower clocks were put in place. The courthouse was dedicated in 1897. co-trumbull-oh This is a "Bayrd & Voit" hand tinted image of downtown, and the Mahoning River from the Courthouse Tower.
