Cabell was well-regarded by his contemporaries, including H. L. Mencken, Edmund Wilson, and Sinclair Lewis. This critical appreciation of the Cabell's works was a very early publication under the Random House imprint. Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer founded Random House in 1927, two years after acquiring the Modern Library imprint from Horace Liveright. The name came from Cerf's quote, "We just said we were going to publish a few books on the side at random." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
