He went to Hollywood in the early 1920s; made a few silent films including Mannequin (1925) and Sumuru (1927). With the advent of talkies, he starred in extravagant early Technicolor musicals including The Bride of the Regiment (1930), Sweet Kitty Bellairs (1930), Viennese Nights (1930), Kiss Me Again (1931). With waning interest in these musicals, his popularity also waned. In 1941, with a starring performance in How Green was My Valley, his popularity rebounded. He received back-to-back Academy Award nominations for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Mrs. Miniver (1942), and Madame Curie (1943). In both, he starred opposite Greer Garson.
