Description: This vintage fantastic Canister/Cracker Jar is by Gerz Germany. This intricately detailed piece is exquisite. The Cider Barrel background color is cream. There are six cameos of a Bachus, a server, and four German castles—Ehrenbreitstein, Heidelberg, Stolzenfels, and Drachenfels--on a dark cobalt blue background, highlighting the raised details of the figures and castles. There is a hand painted raised grapes and leaf design. The handles are applied tree limbs. The lid has a finial that's actually a figure of a man pushing a wheelbarrow filled with grapes. It is definitely a beautiful piece of pottery. The jar is impress marked on the bottom with a triangle and the word Gerz on the bottom. Around the triangle is Made In Germany. This impressed mark is the mark of Simon Peter of Gerz, Germany. Below Gerz, is the date 1869. Gerz is known for their beer steins, and this is designed in the same manner. It comes in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or damage. It stands about 10 inches high to the top of the lid and the width is about 7 inches. Gerz began production in 1857 in Germany. They have have experienced success, bankruptcy, and new owners over the years. They are still in business and owned by Simon Peter. The company established their studio in Hillscheid and has taken appropriate measures to revitalize the Gerz collection with skilled artists while preserving the old traditions of the country and region.
