Description: UP FOR SALE:Vintage Lot of 5 Artist: Fredric Kredel “Soldiers of the American Army, 1775-1941" Bookplates 9" Wide x 12" Tall Laquered Print on Fiberboard Plaques:"Congress' Own" and the Continental Artillery - 1780 Artillery (Gunner and Captain of a Light Company, 2nd Canadian Regiment) Infantry of the Legion 1795 (Captain of the 2nd Sublegion and Private of the 1st Sublegion)Common Militia 1830 New York Zouaves 1863 (5th New York and 44th New York) Corps of Engineers and the Mexican Spy Company 1847 (Sergeant of Spies and Lieutenant of Engineers in a Frock Coat) Splendid pictorial history of military apparel includes meticulously researched, beautifully rendered illustrations of regimental attire from the Revolutionary War and other uniforms. Descriptive text accompanies each illustration. Back in the 1960s, they were lacquered onto pieces of thin board and sold in shops. Kredel, born in Michelstadt in 1900, was trained as a graphic artist and designer, and became adept at wood cuts, pen and ink and watercolors.Kredel fled Nazi Germany in the late 1930s, moved to Vienna and ended up in the United States, where his career really took off. He and his family lived in New York City and Kredel taught at Cooper Union. He was much in demand as a book illustrator and is remembered for his fairy tale characters and botanical drawings, among many genres. Kredel teamed up with military historian and author Frederick Porter Todd for the volume “Soldiers of the American Army, 1775-1941," which came out just before America’s involvement in World War II. It was updated in a 1954 edition. These prints are reproduced from the book.
