Born in a small Czech village near a small town, he spent a considerable time in New-York and in reality grew up in America. He was well-educated by some prominent American artist such as George Willoughby Maynard and other as F. Jones, Edgar M. Ward, who were his teachers at the Academy of Art in New-York, but the etching class of James David Smillie gave direction to his future work. Their influence left a distinct stamp in his work. Vondrous was in his time exact convincing etcher of architectural subjects. His very first prints show great respect for draughtsmanship with a delight for strong contrast of light and shade. Vondrous is primarily an etcher, consummate craftsman, thoroughly versed in the technic of his art.
