Description: Sir Vivian Fuchs. (1908-1999). English scientist-explorer. He is best known as the leader of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, which completed the first overland crossing of Antarctica. Planning for the expedition began in 1953 and involved using Sno-Cat tractors to cross the continent in 100 days. He co-wrote, with Sir Edmund Hillary, The Crossing of Antarctica. Queen Elizabeth knighted him In 1958. 6.5x8.5 autograph letter signed, printed personal stationery, June 20, 1984, to a collector regarding why Fuchs writes his name differently. In full, “Dear Mr. Allen. I am sorry to say that I have not got a photograph to send you, but I enclose a signature on a piece of expedition paper which you may like to have. I have not signed with my two forenames as it would be incorrect to do so because I do not now use the name Ernest. With best wishes, Yours sincerely, V. E. Fuchs.” In very good condition with smudging to one word on last line and two mailing folds. I have been selling books and autographs for over 40 years.
