Description: Vintage Indigenous Canadian Carved Wood Sculpture Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage carved wood bust. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This carving depicts the head and neck of a man. There are polychrome painted details on the face and feather hair ornaments. This item stands approximately 10 1/2 inches tall, and it is about 3 5/8 inches wide by 3 3/4 inches long. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 2.8 ounces. This would be a fine addition to a collection of First Nations or Northwest Coast art. Identification This sculpture is clearly marked in pencil on the back side, "Edward Joe 1981." There are additional markings on the back side which are smaller and much more faint. Of these, I am able to make out the following, "Hand carved by" and "Squamish Nation 2000." After the "Hand Carved by" notation, I can just make out the first letter of the next word, which is presumably a name, and it is "N." I do not know who made this item. The reason that it is dated both 1981 and 2000 is unknown. The "Edward Joe 1981" marking is believed to be spurious. Per Stonington Gallery, Edward Joe is a Cowichan artist who was born on Vancouver Island in 1969; if he had produced this in 1981, he would have been just twelve years old. Joe specializes in paintings and jewelry making. Stylistically, this looks like other Squamish carvings I have seen, so the more faint marking is probably the correct one. Please use your own expertise to identify the origin of this piece. Condition This piece looks very good overall. It has very light wear and minor soiling. There are no post-production chips. At the top of the head, there is a fine split in the wood. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying. Terms of Sale 1.
