Description: Presented for your consideration, a vintage fixed focus binocular from a famous tourist destination in Kent, a county in South East England. Built in the years 1539-1540 by Henry VIII, both Walmer Castle and nearby Deal Castle were formerly part of the area’s coastal defense network. Present day, both sister castles, their grounds and cultivated gardens are a favourite tourist destination. Through the decades various style binoculars were dispensed to tourists to enjoy the lovely sights and meant to be returned after enjoying the outing. Obviously “NOT TO BE TAKEN AWAY” and “PLEASE REPLACE” were not heeded by some tourists and consequently pilfered as souvenirs. This pair, an earlier model (1950’s?/1960’s?) is created of a dense, heavy plastic akin to Bakelite in a rich burgundy red. Commensurate with age and usage, these binoculars exhibit various timeworn bumps, bruises and scratches one would expect with a utilitarian object. As with all vintage and antique objects the patina and wear only adds to the overall charm of the piece. Anglophile or not, a wonderful object to display with vintage maps and guides. Measurements: lying flat side to side 4 1/4” x 1 3/4” in width x 2 5/5” in height with binocular standing on its front lenses. Smoke and pet-free home. Will of course, be carefully parceled to ensure safe arrival to its destination.
