VINTAGE SOLON SCHEMMEL CALIFORNIA ART POTTERY CUENCA TILE SAN JOSE 1920s

Description: Vintage California Pottery Tile Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage art pottery tile by Solon and Schemmel of San Jose, California. Please excuse the glare in the photos. The tile measures approximately 5 13/16 inches long by 5 13/16 inches wide by 5/8 inch thick. Unpacked, it weighs 1 pound 10.8 ounces. This Spanish-style California pottery cuenca tile has a central diamond pattern, with corner floral motifs, in beautiful colors. There is green velveteen affixed to the back side. This piece would be a great addition to collection of American art tiles; it would look good in an early California decor. Identification Since this tile has a cloth backing, there are no exposed markings. It feels smooth on the back side, so it is probably unmarked. This pattern and glazing is documented as having been made by Solon and Schemmel of San Jose, California on page 113 of the reference entitled, California Tile: The Golden Era 1910-1940 Hispano Moresque to Woolenius. This piece is circa 1920s-1930s. Condition The tile looks very good overall, with no cracks. It has very light wear. There are some small and minor edge and corner flakes, as well as a couple of tiny nicks to the cuenca lines. Some of the flakes/nicks look as if they have had color added.
