The motion and lighting are controlled by the power cord. Once plugged in and turned on Santa begins to move his head and raise his hand holding the pipe. The lamp and two backlights come on. The Sound is controlled by 2 AA batteries (not included) and the sound dial on the back. When I first turned on the music (Christmas music) it had a little scratching when adjusting volume. The more I lowered and raised the volume the less it happened. The scratching is only when you adjust the level and once you set the volume it stops. This is common with older electronics like radios and tuners. Like I said once the desired volume is set you will not hear it and only hear the music as you should. Santa's book has come out of his hand. It has little grooves in the back of the book that sits on his hand but I see what looks like an old dot of hot glue so it may have at one time been adhered. The hand holding the book doesn't move and it does have the little grooves that fits his hand perfectly so you really don't need to glue it as it stays in place on its on. Just like to point out every little detail. The display is in excellent condition and aside from the couple little notes I made is near flawless.
