Description: Rocky Mount is a city in Edgecombe and Nash Counties in the state of North Carolina with a population of 54,341 in 2020. It is 45 miles east of Raleigh, the state capital. A post office was established at the falls of Tar River in 1816. At this point, the name “Rocky Mount” officially appears in documented history, referring to the rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River. Rocky Mount Mill, the second cotton mill in the state, was built there soon after in 1818 as was the longest continuous railroad in the world up to that time, the “Wilmington and Weldon Railroad”, which ran about two miles east of the mill. In the latter half of the 19th century, the tobacco industry became established in the state. Adjacent to the sandy coastal plain, the community was well suited to take advantage of the rapidly rising demand for Bright Leaf tobacco that grew best in the sandy soil. At the turn of the 20th century, Rocky Mount became the northern headquarters of the “Atlantic Coast Line Railroad”, which located its major repair shops and yard facilities in the town. Rocky Mount was incorporated in 1907 as a city of around 7,500. This is an uncredited card c 1910 that chronicles ‘West Side of Main St. looking South, Rocky Mount, N.C.”. It is in very good condition except for a bent upper left corner. The image of the street with a “Hardware” sign and awnings. There are few people on the sidewalk. The reverse has a “this is a pretty town with a nice hotel… with a restaurant connected” message on the clean reverse. The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwise noted, I use Wikipedia, Playle's and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible.
