Description: Vintage Oak Telephone Case w/ Bells ~ Kellogg Switchboard F408S ~ Made in the United States! Beautiful vintage item made from oak! (I believe this is called quarter-sawn oak.) It is made as a case. Photo #1 shows the front view. There are 2 bells attached to the top (see photo #2). The bells will make a dinging sound if the case is moved, but I do not know how it was supposed to function back in the day. Possibly, a handset was attached by the cord that is now cut. This cord can be seen in the photos. (See especially photo #11, which shows the cord coming out of the back of the case.) This item has a manufacturer's number F408S and was made by Kellogg Switchboard & Supply Co. of Chicago, IL. The manufacturer's information is on a label attached to the lower part of the back of the case. Photo #3 shows the back, and photo #4 is zoomed in on this label. The item number is stamped into the edge of the top of the piece of wood on which the bells are attached, as can be seen in photo #5. (Note that the wooden area shown in photo #5 is only visible when the case is opened.) The case has a beveled-edge front door with 2 hinges, and this door is held shut by a regular type of screw (shown at the right-hand side of photos #1 and 3). Once the screw is removed, the inner workings are exposed. See photo #6. Photo #7 is a close-up of the 2 cylinder-shaped things. Photo #8 shows the back side (i.e., inside) of the front door. Photo #9 shows the left side of the case, and photo #10 shows the right side, when closed. Photo #11 shows the back side of the case. There is a channel cut into this back side, as can be seen. The channel in the back side leaves a curved cut-out in the top and bottom edges of the back, as can be seen in photos #2 and 12. Note that the item number F408S shown in photo #5 can also be seen in photo #11, near the upper left, where it is again stamped into the wood. The back piece of the case has a beveled edge similar to the front, and the back piece is slightly larger than the front door, as can be seen in the photos. The bottom side of the case has a hole centered in the middle, as can be seen in photo #12. I do not know what this hole was for. Happy to send additional photos upon request. CONDITION: This item is in vintage condition, and could use a good cleaning. The condition is shown in detail in the photos, but I am happy to answer any questions upon request. APPROXIMATE MEASUREMENTS: 8 inches top to bottom, 6 1/2 inches wide, 4 inches deep. The cord sticks about 13 1/2 inches. This has been in my family for many years, and comes to you from a smoke-free environment. Will be carefully packed for shipping, in a box. Ask any questions before buying, as there are no returns.
