Van Joseph is a member of the Squamish Nation. He was born in 1964 in New Westminster and grew up in Surrey and North Vancouver, British Columbia. He mainly concentrates on his wood carvings but has also done paintings and carvings in argillite. His works include masks, totem poles, bowls and plaques.
