Description: This is a rarer find. A mid-century new/unsmoked J. Waille classic billiard with a slight bend to the vulcanite stem. This flame grain beauty is NO ‘leftover’ from Jean’s shop after his retirement in 1993 and untimely death. The Waille family otherwise were premiere pipe makers in France and commanded the St. Claude market in their heyday!!! Both Jean’s father André Waille was a highly regarded pipe maker and his brother, Michel Waille, was a luminary artisan in the industry at that time. Jean Waille hand selected his Algerian ancient briars from his travels there. Upon his return to southern France he established ‘Le Pipier de Lunel’ in the town of Lunel. The rest is truly pipe history!! This particular specimen foremost has a very fine flame grain Algerian ancient briar!! Let my pics tell you about that!! A thick rimmed bowl and robust shank make a formidable stummel. The chunky high quality ebonite stem has a gentle curve for an ergonomic smoker. You will see that tenon has a ‘stinger’ that is easily removed, if not your preference, though the draw is very smooth with it in place! Just a fine vintage pipe seeking its inaugural smoke!! This is ‘Top of the Line’ for Jean Waille’s pipes and this unsmoked, handsome vintage classic is a find for me indeed. Frankly, I’d be honored to smoke this one, but alas I can’t keep them all!! Jean left many unsold pipes in his shuttered factory when he retired. He didn’t leave many like this!
