Description: Vintage Luzern, Switzerland Postcard 1916 Extremely RARE - Wehrli, AG & Co. production – commemorating Adolf Grieder & Cie. Specifics: Extremely RARE 1916, Wehrli, AG & Company Vintage postcard (Review the detailed descriptive analysis) Postcard circa: 1911-16 Cover title/theme: 24700 Luzern Seebrucke und Pilantus Production / Rendering: Wehrli, AG & Co. Promotion: Adolf Grieder & Cie. in Lucerne (commemorating new shop/branch opening 1911) Postage: SWITZERLAND – 1914 – WILLIAM TELL - Scott # 167a – 10 Centimes. Postmark: Pilatus-Kulm hotel / July 11, 1916 (Mt. Pilantus, Switzerland) Descriptive Analysis Adolf Grieder, (November 11, 1854 – April 29, 1933) began his career with a thirteen year apprenticeship as a silk ribbon weaver; then working as a representative of a Parisian textile company and employed by the Henneberg silk company. In 1889 he founded Adolf Grieder & Cie., a silk goods company featuring mail order and retail sales in Zurich, Switzerland. As early as 1893, the company expanded to a larger location and set up special departments featuring women’s clothing and tailoring, stockings and fashion items. In 1908 the men’s department was opened, coinciding with a new shop/ branch location in Lucerne, Switzerland in 1911. This postcard commemorates the establishment of this new first shop/branch location of Adolf Grieder & Cie. in Lucerne, Switzerland. The postcard was uniquely produced by Wehrli, AG & Co. Originally formed as the Wehrli Brothers, the three brothers, Arthur, Bruno and Harry merged with Bachmann of Lucerne in 1904, forming Wehrli AG & Company. They published high quality photo-chromolithography postcards and also real photo cards. By 1920 Orell Fussli of Photoglob was a major shareholder in this company and the two firms merged in 1924. This postcard was specially produced by Wehrli, AG & Co. to mark this new location occasion in Lucerne and may have served as a promotion token. Although many postcards were produced with this same “Luzern theme”, this particular card features two ferry tour boats (foreground), side by side in unique position as compared with other circulating cards of this same era. This appears to be a “limited” production card, as it is extremely hard to find, produced specifically for Adolf Grieder & Cie. in Lucerne, Switzerland. *Another interesting association with this postcard is that it is postmarked on July 11, 1916 at the Hotel Pilatus-Kulm in Lucerne. This historic mountain hotel Pilatus Kulm was built in 1890 and completely renovated in 2010. The hotel is accessible by the world’s steepest cog railway. Queen Victoria rode up Mt. Pilatus on horseback in 1868. The Hotel Pilatus-Kulm was built there in 1890, and in 2010 was completely renovated. The Queen Victoria Restaurant was named in honor of the queen. Market-fresh cuisine using local produce is served. Richard Wagner is also one of the Kulm Hotel's past illustrious guests. Postcard is handwritten in old style Kurrent German font. Correspondence is dated July 7, 1916 (“Peace time era”). Card is postmarked “Pilantus-Kulm”, Switzerland (an old hotel built on top of Mt. Pilantus). Very few of these postcards are still in existence today, making this an extremely RARE and unique addition to any collection.
