Description: This is a large 14.5” inch diameter Moon mask from the Baluba (Luba) people of the Democratic Republican of the Congo. These masks are usually smaller than this example. The mask is carved of a heavy thick wood with decorative inlays of brass, beads and broken shells arrangement in a sun or star pattern around the edges. I have been a student/collector of Pre-Columbia art and culture for 50 years. I branched off and started collecting African art around 30 years ago when I acquired this mask in a small collection of items I purchased. My interest in collecting African art has wained over the years and I will listing some of my items over the next few months. This mask has a screw in hanging hoop in top that was there when I bought it. A heavy mask shipping at 5 pounds.
