Description: On offer, we have 6 glossy photographs of the Los Prietos Boys Camp near Santa Barbara, CA.. The series, titled "A Day In Paradise", are mounted on a matte board, each with a description pasted beside them. The backs of the boards are signed "Josef Muench" and stamped "Josef Muench Pictorial Photography 839 Mission Canyon Rd. Santa Barbara, Calif No.__". The photographs measure approximately 7 1/2" X 9 1/4", the matte boards are 20" X 16". The clear black and white photographs (silver gelatin?) include 1. Setting Up Exercises, 2. School, 3. Work projects, 4. Recreation, 5. The Old Swimming Hole and 6. Taps. Our best guess is that these date to the 1950's. About Los Prietos Boys Camp: Built in 1933 as part of the Civilian Conservation Corps, it became a camp for wayward boys in 1944. It is still in operation today as a successful minimum security Juvenile Detention Center. It is located on Paradise Road, near Santa Barbara, CA in the beautiful Los Padres National Forest, and has popular campgrounds nearby. About the photographer: Josef Muench (1904-1998) was known as the founding father of color landscape photography. His photographs were published in many magazines including Arizona Highways where he was featured for over 50 years. A resident of Santa Barbara, CA., he often photographed local places of interest. Our best guess is that these were mounted for an exhibition or photography show. There are notes on the backs "23 3/4" and "4 Cols.", perhaps this was published? The photographs are all bright and clear. I see an occasional light scratch on the glossy finishes. The matte board has toned and aged. Some fool wrote in pencil at the bottom "No name given". He neglected to look at the backs and see the signatures. Please view my photos for more description. My friend who collects everything is starting to part with a few of his treasures.
