Description: The Razor: This is a nice small format cutthroat straight razor with nice lines manufactured by the renowned Sheffield cutler, Frederick Reynolds. It measures just under 5/8ths" at its widest point, with a square point on the toe and boasts a subtle bellied edge and curved spine. It has a nicely preserved maker's stamped imprint, showing only moderate residual pitting and faint scratches. Nice, grippy jimps on the tang enhance control and stability when in use. It's in great shape! These old shoulderless rattler grinds (sometimes erroneously referred to as a faux frameback) were a concave precursor to what was later to become the true hollow grind. The rattler grind was unique in that the blade was ground laterally from the heel to the toe rather than the traditional spine-to-edge grinds. This grind provided a blade that was easily honed that still retained some of the the rigidity and strength of the heavier grinds. The concept is similar to that of an I-beam. By removing the non-structural steel, the makers were able to create a blade that was lighter yet retained solidity and strength. The best of both worlds! It is a refined, seasoned and nimble shaving instrument. It has been restored, as described below. The Work: I refurbished this blade by removing all rust and as much of the pitting as I could without endangering its lines and original essence, polishing it to a nice satin sheen. I installed NOS British- made Bakelite scales utilizing understated brass collars and brass pins. I also added brass pivot-washers to enhance the blade's already impressive longevity. This blade is 130+ years old and still going strong, ready to serve several more generations! It has a nice nimble feel in the hand, gliding smoothly on the face. I honed this razor with great care, as I would for my own razors I use for personal daily use. This razor was honed with the following progression with one layer of tape to protect the spine: Naniwa Chosera 1k Shapton Kuromaku Ceramic 2k Shapton Kuromaku Ceramic 5k Seuhiro Kouseki 10k Maruka Narutaki Asagi Vintage Scottish Linen Fire Hose Strop Tony Miller Rough Out Strop Tony Miller Fast Bridle Strop My Story: I fell in love with vintage straight razors some years back when I became irritated with the exorbitant cost of disposable razor cartridges. Utilizing my background in jewelry and sculpture, I taught myself to refurbish antique straight razors, to make custom razor scales, to pin them properly and, through great effort and dedication, have gained a reputation for nicely honed shaving edges. Each of these blades is a journey, with a history. A man's hands created it long ago to last for generations. You and I are part of those generations. I try to be sensitive and cognizant of the historical context of each razor, as well as the spirit and intentions of the original blade-maker so that I may bring them back to life for you, my customer.
