Description: Dunlap 3701 Block Plane 1943-1956 (made for Craftsman by DUNLAP) – Actual blade piece (silver steel) has the following imprinted on it. ‘DUNLAP APPROVED BL. 019.3701’. Measurements: 6 5/8” L x 2” W MADE IN USA. Produced by Millers Falls under the Dunlap name. Dunlap planes were manufactured by Sargent, Millers Falls and Stanley. They were sold beginning in the fall of 1937 through fall of 1956. The Dunlap 3701 has a horizontal screw cutter adjustment. A beautiful example of a 1940-50s era block plane This well built and performing plane has been part of my workshop for several decades. The story is that Tom Dunlap assumed control of the hardware division of Sears in 1937. The goal was to furnish Sears customers a lower cost alternative to the Craftsman brand. Tom was determined to provide an attractive as well as quality tool. This was done through strict quality controls and the use of proven tool companies. There was never a Dunlap factory. All tools were contracted through Sears from companies such as Danielson or Moore Drop Forge. Dunlap tools began appearing in Sears catalogs in the 1938-1939 Fall and Winter edition, and they continued to be offered into the early 1960s.
