We are delighted to offer Vintage Cuban Revolution Print #4, which is part of a portfolio of 40 original woodcut prints that was displayed at a 1961 exhibition at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Havana (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana). The woodcuts in this portfolio were created by Cuba's Consejo Nacional de Cultura (National Culture Council) to illustrate the main points of Fidel Castro's fiery September 2, 1960 "Declaration of Havana" speech that served as a manifesto of the new revolution. In his speech before a huge crowd in Havana's main square, the Cuban leader harshly denounced the United States and praised Cuba's new allies: the Soviet Union and People's Republic of China. Castro left no doubt in his speech that, in spite of earlier denials, he was transforming Cuba into a one-party, communist state, which it remains today. The original woodcut in this listing was designed by Juan Sanchez Sanchez (1929-2020), a graphic artist and art critic whose work can be found in collections worldwide, including the Cuban Fine Arts Museum in Havana. This hard-to-find graphic, which measures 14 by 19 inches (35 x 48 cm), echoes a theme in Fidel Castro's 1960 speech that “Todo los pueblos del mundo son hermanos!” (All the peoples of the world are brothers). The graphic shows us a handshake between two people and images of three characters in the sky. One appears to be the devil, the others Cain and Abel, the biblical first sons of Adam and Eve. The story of Cain and Abel is rich in symbolism as a lesson in jealousy, anger and forgiveness.
