Description: Presenting a very special carved wood Blessed Virgin Mary. Carved with humble, simple detail. Slight gesture of the folded hands. The face is without features and aligns with the center of the hands. The halo is bowed forward and is seamlessly articulated out of the wood’s back. In fact, this reverential bow informs the complete piece’s design. This piece was made in Coos Bay, Oregon. The easiest way to Coos Bay is by car along Route 101. Until 1936 to conveniently reach Coos Bay you had to take a ferry. After they built the bridge, Coos Bay could more easily be appreciated. Timber for a long time, besides fishing, supported the town. The Myrtlewood Tree became something of a celebrity in the 1950s through the 1970s. Route 101 went through Washington, Oregon and California. At the height of post war family vacations, there was a gift shops selling Myrtlewood gifts up and down the coast. There are very few Catholic wood carved pieces identified during this time. Note: Unless you go to Italy, you will be hard pressed to find original carved Catholic pieces. Today at Catholic Supply stores statues are primarily resin. If solid wood, open your pocket book because they are not cheap. Wood: Myrtlewood Date of Manufacture: 1960s-1970s Made in Coos Bay Oregon Condition: Very Good. There are some light marks.
