Description: VINTAGE BRIAR PIPE FACE OF POPE PIO XII UNSMOKED To celebrate the election of Pope Pius XII, in 1939, a shopkeeper from Rome commissioned the company F.lli Rossi of Molina di Barasso (VA) to create a certain face of a bridge that reproduces the face of the new bridge. The problem of this series was foreseen in a number of pieces, with the possibility of increasing up to about 300. Rossi put them to work in a special department, where a small group of incisors had already been producing sculptures that portrayed faces, animals and objects for some time. In technical language they are called "Caricatures".Before the summer of the same year, the first dozen pieces arrived in the shop. It was immediately a great success. Tourists, faithful, collectors, passing foreigners carried this memory with them, along with other souvenirs of Rome. But someone took it male. There were those who considered it inappropriate, even blasphemous that the face of the Pope ended up on a pipe. Obviously we must also consider the era, the mentality of the people, the politicians of the time. Eventually, after pressure from the authorities, and even some threats from fanatics, the shopkeeper, a malinre, was forced to see every order to deliver the sale and to cancel in progress at Rossi. With almost a hundred pieces already sold, almost as many remained in the manufacturer's workshop, partly semi-finished. This leftover ended up in a crate which was stowed in a closet along with other warehouse funds.The second part of this story reopens in 1984. In that year the glorious pipe factory, after four generations and 100 years of history (the largest in the world between the two wars with 800 workers and up to 50,000 pieces produced in a day) asked for the cessation of the activity by means of an arrangement with creditors preventive . Everything is sold, dismembered, canceled. Jean Marie Alberto Paronelli, owner of Paronelli Pipes Company, does not miss the opportunity to "replenish" his museum. He manages to buy the famous Sample Room, the entire archive, furnishings, machinery, a large part of the warehouse and the punches. And in the warehouse, together with a thousand pieces of Rossi's history, he also finds the PIO XII °, hidden at the time.
