Large 26 inch Tall X 10 inch wide Vintage Bamana Antelope 5 Horned Mask. Bambara or Bamana Tribe, Most likely Mali, Africa This is a large and beautifully carved Vintage Bambara Wood Face Mask, most likely from Mali. This mask is worn during ceremonies by elders as part of the Ntomo cult. This mask is surmounted by horns that indicate the different human characteristics. This mask is a five horned male mask symbolizes the 5 th sense of 6 necessary to know the world. I believe that this is a 5 horned mask, even if there is an additional antelope on the top (with 2 horns). I know basically not much about these except for what I looked up on the internet. I am by no means and expert, or very knowledgeable in this field. I just know that this is a very interesting piece of art. I don't know how to date this, but the wood does appear very old. There are a few issues with this piece, a small chip on the nose, A split in the wood on the top of head between the horns.and the antelope's head has been repaired (it was broken off at some point). See pictures. It was nailed, but I'm sure a better repair job could be done. When hung on a wall none of these issues are visible. The item has no markings. Feel free to ask questions, I'm not sure I'll be able to answer them. But I'll try. Thanks for looking!
